Medico-Legal experience

Dr Ashworth has been an expert witness in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine for a number of years. He has undergone his expert witness training. He is registered with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), Action Against Medical Accidents (AvMA), the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He enjoys a full medico-legal practice representing both claimants and defendants in personal injury and clinical negligence actions. Dr Ashworth holds weekly medico-legal clinics in Manchester, but is happy to travel in order to conduct home and prison visits. His Claimant/Defendant ratio split is approximately 90/10 and he can usually turnaround reports within 6-8weeks, sooner if required.

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Ashworth has been a substantive Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine since 2012. He is the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) Deputy Director at Wythenshawe Hospital and has led the hospital in their development and implementation of an Extracorporeal CPR Programme, which very few centres in the UK currently offer.

Clinical Interests

Dr Ashworth has a specialist in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, anaesthesia for heart & lung transplantation, general & regional anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. He has a particular clinical interest in ECMO, mechanical circulatory support (MCS) and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE).

Research Interests

Dr Ashworth has over 50 peer-reviewed publications on topics including ECMO, MCS and TOE.

Management Experience

NICE - Consultant Clinical Advisor in the Interventional Procedures Programme.

Teaching & Training

Dr Ashworth is frequently invited to give national and international lectures on both ECMO and MCS.
