Overview

Medico-Legal experience

Provides independent expert reports in haematology, including breach of duty, causation, and prognosis. Experienced in analysis of complex medical records, clinical chronology reconstruction, and assessment of adherence to national guidelines and standards of care. Dr Burgess undertakes medico-legal work in accordance with CPR Part 35, with an overriding duty to the Court. Currently undertaking formal Expert Witness Certification (Bond Solon / University of Aberdeen).

Clinical Practice & Experience

Dr Jordan Burgess serves as a Consultant Haematologist at a large tertiary NHS teaching hospital, where he delivers specialist care across both malignant and benign haematology. His day‑to‑day responsibilities span inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and on‑call duties, ensuring that patients with a wide spectrum of haematological conditions receive timely and expert management. In his role he routinely leads multidisciplinary discussions, contributes to clinical governance activities and participates in the review of serious adverse events, complaints and incident analyses, thereby influencing service quality and patient safety at a system level.

With subspecialty expertise in haemostasis and thrombosis, haemoglobinopathies and complex diagnostic haematology, Dr. Burgess has extensive experience handling high‑acuity cases. He has managed patients with acute thrombosis, bleeding disorders, anticoagulation complications and a full range of haematological malignancies—including leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, AL amyloidosis, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative neoplasms. His clinical acumen is reflected in his ability to integrate laboratory data, imaging and patient history to formulate precise diagnoses and individualized treatment plans, often in the context of urgent or life‑threatening presentations.

Clinical Interests

Dr Burgess’s clinical interests are anchored in venous thromboembolism and thrombophilia, with a particular focus on the optimisation of anticoagulation strategies and the management of their complications. He is actively involved in refining protocols for the investigation and treatment of thrombophilic disorders, and he contributes to the development of regional guidelines that standardise testing and reduce diagnostic error. His work in bleeding disorders encompasses both inherited conditions such as haemophilia and acquired coagulopathies, where he applies a nuanced understanding of haemostatic pathways to guide therapeutic decisions.

Equally passionate about haemoglobinopathies, Dr Burgess monitors patients with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, addressing both disease‑specific complications and the broader implications for transfusion medicine. He remains engaged with diagnostic haematology, interpreting complex laboratory results and integrating them into clinical pathways for haematological malignancies, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms and AL amyloidosis. His interests also extend to clinical governance, where he analyses system failures and redesigns diagnostic pathways to enhance patient outcomes.

Research Interests

His research agenda concentrates on immune mediated haematological disorders, including immune thrombocytopaenic purpura (ITP), autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Dr. Burgess seeks to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms, improve diagnostic algorithms and evaluate novel therapeutic approaches within these complex disease entities.

Management Experience

In a leadership capacity, Dr Burgess chairs the Thrombosis Multidisciplinary Team meeting and the local Thrombosis Committee, overseeing the development and implementation of anticoagulation and thrombosis management pathways. He has driven service improvement initiatives through guideline development, incident review and quality assurance projects, notably authoring a regional thrombophilia testing guideline and a regional thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) management guideline that have become benchmarks for evidence based practice.

Summary of Publications

Dr Burgess is an author and co-author of peer-reviewed publications in haematology, including work published in the British Journal of Haematology, American Journal of Hematology, and BMJ. Publications cover thrombosis, haemolysis, and haematological malignancy.

Teaching & Training

Dr Burgess is a dedicated educator, regularly delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching sessions. He mentors junior doctors, clinical scientists and multidisciplinary staff, emphasizing diagnostic reasoning, haematology pathways and the principles of clinical governance. His instructional style blends case based learning with practical skills training, fostering a generation of clinicians equipped to manage sophisticated haematological problems.
